New boost for Dutch mushroom research

Ger Van Zanen was one of the guest researchers at the herbarium of Naturalis for a very long time. He was also an enthousiastic mycologist. When he passed away a couple of years ago, he left part of his legacy to the Dutch Mycological Society (NMV, The NMV now decided to boost the research of Dutch mushrooms by spending part of the legacy to combine traditional morphological knowledge with molecular species delimitation and barcoding. In the next five years Jorinde Nuytinck will collaborate with Dutch amateur mycologists to add a molecular perspective to their morphological insights.

The boletes and milkcaps of the Netherlands

The Flora Agaricina Neerlandica series describes the agaric fungi and boletes that occur in the Netherlands and surrounding areas.  It contains identification keys, descriptions, plates, pictures and information on the ecology and distribution of the species. The 7th volume will appear in August and is devoted to boletes and milkcaps.

In the boletes there have been major changes at genus level in recent years which are nicely summarized in the new flora. The milkcaps are the first group of mushoorms treated in this series that are fully supported by molecular results, based on the work of Jorinde Nuytinck and colleagues.

An excellent opportunity to become familiar with some of the most beautiful and spectacular Dutch mushrooms. For more information, go to

Safe trips to the IBC 2017!

Some of our researchers are getting ready to present their latest work at the IBC in China. Good luck!

  • Saroj will explain his pollination work on Impatiens from South East Asia.
  • Frederic will present his latest discoveries on the evolution of woodiness in flowering plants.
  • Sofia will show her preliminary data on her project on global distribution patterns of mycoheterotrophic plants.
  • Vincent will present an overview of the interactions between mycoheterotrophic plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
